Caroline Baillie
Caroline is Chair of Engineering Education at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Previously Caroline was at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada where she was cross appointed into Chemical Engineering, Sociology and Women's studies. At UWA, Caroline is the founding director of FASE (Faculty Academy for the Scholarship of Education) through which she builds staff capacity in engineering education development and research. She is particularly interested in ways in which science and engineering can help to create solutions for the environment as well as social problems. She founded the global 'Engineering and Social Justice and peace' (esjp.org) network in 2004 and studies the theory and practice of socially just engineering and the education which facilitates this. She also applies this to her own technical work on facilitating communities to develop poverty reducing solutions to waste reduction (wasteforlife.org). She has over 180 publications, papers and books in materials science and engineering education. Her most recent books (published by Morgan and Claypool) include 'Engineering and Society: working towards social justice' with George Catalano and 'Needs and feasibility: a guide to engineers in community projects' with Eric Feinblatt, Emily Berrington and Thimothy Thamae. In her spare time Caroline runs a theatre company (criticalstage.co.uk).
