Camaren Peter

Camaren Peter is deeply engaged with theories of complexity, systems, assemblages, transdisciplinarity, sustainability and urbanisation, and is especially concerned with their philosophical implications for humanity and society. At a practical level, a key aspect of his research involves formulating strategies for sustainable development at different implementation scales (namely; the global, regional, national, provincial and city scales). This involves understanding global changes (i.e. social, economic, technological, environmental, climatological and political) and their potential impacts, assessing the diverse futures that may result from these changes, and assessing their implications for the developing world. Over recent years, he has devoted a great deal of attention to understanding transitions to urban sustainability in developing world cities in particular, and is deeply interested in how these cities may be influenced by global change in the 21st Century.

He studied theoretical physics at undergraduate level, before studying astrophysics at post-graduate level. He then worked for eight years at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), after which he completed a PhD at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town. Since then, Camaren has worked closely with a wide range of local and global institutions on the key development challenges of this era. Locally, he works closely with the Sustainability Institute (Stellenbosch University), and has acted in an advisory capacity to various private sector organisations and NGO’s. Globally, he has worked with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations HABITAT programme, amongst a range of others. Some of his most recent publications include UNEP’s position paper on cities for Rio+20 in 2012 (“Sustainable, Resource-Efficient Cities in the 21st Century: Making it Happen!” ), and the “State of the African Cities Report 2014” for UN-HABITAT. He was recently nominated to the “Global Who’s Who” for the 2015 edition.

Camaren has published in a wide variety of publications (i.e. books, magazines, newspapers, journals, etc.) and has collaborated extensively across disciplinary boundaries. He also works with artists, photographers, designers, and other oddballs and social outcasts where possible. His blog can be found at http://thoughtfactory-cam.blogspot.com/.
