Brian Francis Culkin

Brian Culkin is a writer, theorist, and film director. He's earned a reputation for delivering thought provoking political & social commentary to the delight of his audiences.

Prior to being fully committed to developing his his craft as a filmmaker, writer, and artist - Brian graduated from Skidmore College 01' where he was a standout student-athlete. After breaking every scoring record in history of Skidmore, with nearly 1800 points and numerous league and national accolades, he played professional basketball in Europe for a year after graduation. Upon playing, and after working briefly in real estate finance, he founded and became managing director/CEO of United Mortgage Group, a commercial and residential mortgage firm where he managed a team of twenty brokers and operational staff from 2004 -2010.

After several years of travel, working as a consultant for the Open Mind Training Institute under Dr. Ronald Alexander, and quietly honing his perception, ideas, and artistic sense, he began his writing, commentary, and work in film direction/screenwriting. Thus far, in terms of film, Brian has directed two documentaries: the feature length ('The Mission') and the documentary short ‘Voices.' His first film is the short picture, "Now, Passage" which was finished in 2017.

In terms of screenplays, he has completed four. One of which “The Phone Thief” is currently in pre-production and which Brian will direct.

And for his cultural commentary and writing, his first book "Postscript on Boxing" was released in late 2016. It is a book that chronicles and comments upon the simultaneous collapse of the industrial economy and the sport of boxing in response to the rise of the networked economy and globalization. His next book, released in 2017, "There is no such thing as Boston" is a deeply reflective meditation on contemporary urban gentrification in both Boston and the world. His third book, also released in 2017, "Conversations on Gentrification" is a further exploration of gentrification as both an urban fact and as a concept that helps to explain the nature of 21st century life. His forth book, "The Meaning of Trump" will be published by the London based Zero Books and released in 2018. He is also in the process of research and writing several other book projects, including "Conversations on America," a book on contemporary basketball, tentatively entitled, "Ballin in the Gaza Strip" and a book on the national opiate crisis.
