Robert Appelbaum

A native of New York City, a long-time resident of San Francisco and for a number of years a Lecturer in Lancaster, England, Robert Appelbaum is currently Professor of English Literature at Uppsala University, Sweden. He is the award-winning author of four books and many articles, and contributes regularly to Times Higher Education as a memoirist and critic. A specialist in the early modern period, he has recently turned his attention to food studies and terrorism studies. Before publishing Working the Aisles, his most recent book was Dishing It Out: In Search of the Restaurant Experience.'A serious examination of the restaurant but also a wildly funny and human romp through restaurant culture high and low’, said the reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald about Dishing It Out. ‘Appelbaum's recounting of visits to restaurants while researching the book and memories of restaurants past are among the most evocative and compelling “reviews” I have read.’ This book was recently translated into Italian, with a preface by the founder of the Slow Food movement, Carlo Petrini. Professor Appelbaum lives in Uppsala with his wife Marion.
