Dave Hann
Dave Hann

Much of Dave Hann's biography is told in the book he co-authored, No Retreat (2003). The book and Hann's life along with it have become part of a debate about the permanent need for anti-fascist organizations. No Retreat has been recently translated into Serbian (Nema Povlacenja, 2010) and a Polish translation is underway.
Plasterers and builders do not tend to accumulate the types of educational or cultural achievements that fill up writers' biographies. This is the case with Dave Hann. He often wished he had taken a degree in history but all his writing, as his political practice, was based on self-reliance and his own development of his skills. He was a dedicated researcher, often irritated by the lack of attention to details and dates by professional historians. He diligently pieced together a long view of anti-fascist activism from interviews and archives that revealed continuities in principles and practices overlooked by those only interested in factional disputes.
On his death, he left thirty pounds in his current account, a manuscript of a hundred thousand words and a trunk full of anti-fascist publications, spanning the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, accumulated in the course of his research for Physical Resistance.
